How do I choose a boudoir photographer in South Bend or Michiana?
Start with reputation. Google them, look for a real Google Business profile and dozens of genuine reviews from actual clients — not stock praise. Then look at their actual work: photography is an art form and styles vary wildly, so book the photographer whose style truly matches your vision. Reputation first, then style.
Reputation is huge when it comes to selecting any service business, and boudoir is no different. You can find a lot of that reputation simply by Googling someone and seeing whether they have a Google Business profile where real people can leave public reviews. Honestly, it would be hard for me to trust somebody who doesn't have some sort of online presence — and I think it would be nearly impossible for me to trust somebody who has none at all. Me personally, I have over 50 public reviews across Google and Facebook, and every single one is a real client or a real person who has worked with me, testifying to my character, my work ethic, and the work itself.
So firstly, I'd look at someone's reputation and read their reviews. Secondly, I'd look hard at their work — is it something you actually like? Photography is an art form, and styles are going to be drastically different from one photographer to the next. It's incredibly important to find a photographer whose style aligns with your vision for the shoot.
Whether you're in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, or Goshen, the women I work with all start the same way: a little searching, a little comparing, reading reviews, and finding the style that feels like them. Take your time with those two steps. They'll tell you almost everything you need to know.
What separates an okay boudoir photographer from a great one?
The experience, and how they pose your specific figure. A great boudoir photographer protects your self-esteem with every word and action, knows how to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and poses for your body — plus-size, petite, every figure — using lighting and angles that flatter you without Photoshopping you to death.
Boudoir photography is so much more than just the pictures — it's also the experience of stepping outside your comfort zone and outside the box of what you'd normally do. So you need to book somebody who takes your self-esteem into consideration with every word that comes out of their mouth, every action, every part of their process. The difference between an okay boudoir photographer and a great one is someone who knows how to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera and gives you an experience that pulls you out of your shell. Even if the pictures were only so-so, the most important part is helping the client feel comfortable and leave with a positive experience.
Of course, the pictures matter enormously too — and there, the difference comes down to posing. If you're a certain figure, you want to work with somebody who knows how to pose that figure. If you're plus-size, there are poses that flatter plus-size figures that wouldn't look good on a thinner client, and vice versa. There are techniques to make your legs look longer, to make you look taller or thinner, to give you more flawless skin without Photoshopping you to hell and back.
Most people never think about the experience — how the photographer talks to them, walks them through every detail, helps them choose wardrobe, and finds the lighting that fits their figure best. Most boudoir photographers don't even take lighting into consideration; they'll just use a window or natural light. If you're working with a natural-light boudoir photographer, be careful — they generally have a hard time lighting different figures, skin textures, and skin tones, and it becomes very much a one-stop shop. What's great about my studio is that we custom-tailor the entire experience — wardrobe, colors, backdrops, lighting schemes, even the lens choice — to your figure, your skin tones and textures, and your vision.
Does it matter if hair and makeup are built into the boudoir day?
Yes — a lot. Everyday makeup and professional camera-ready makeup are completely different. Dewy makeup is trendy but reads shiny and oily on camera. And my hair and makeup artist, Aletheia Jean, stays the entire shoot for touch-ups, hair adjustments, wardrobe help, and as your personal hype woman — most artists leave after the first hour.
There's a huge difference between the everyday makeup you put on at home and professional, camera-ready makeup. For example, right now dewy makeup is the biggest trend, and it looks great in person — but on camera it looks horrendous, making you look shiny and oily. We don't want that. Camera-ready makeup is also about making sure your complexion stays true to you and true to what the camera is going to see.
And here's what I do differently from everyone else: I have my hair and makeup artist, Aletheia Jean, stay during the entire photo shoot to help with makeup touch-ups, hair adjustments, wardrobe changes, and to be a personal hype woman the whole way through. Most makeup artists for boudoir photographers leave once hair and makeup is finished. Mine stays with you through every step to make sure you look your absolute best at all times. When you're comparing studios, ask whether hair and makeup is built into the day or treated as an add-on — and whether the artist stays. It changes everything.
Why should a same-day reveal matter when I'm choosing a photographer?
Because most studios make you wait days or weeks; I show you fully edited, skin-retouched images within an hour of your shoot, on a 65-inch TV. Waiting only builds anxiety. And since most of my clients are busy business owners or traveling in, seeing everything the same day turns one day into the whole experience.
Most photographers will do the shoot with you and then have you wait days, if not weeks, to see your images. When you work with me, you see edited, skin-retouched images that very same day — within about an hour after the photo shoot, shown on a 65-inch TV. I do this for a couple of reasons. One, who wants to wait that long? You want to see everything right away, and the waiting only builds suspense. If you're already nervous, you're going to be even more nervous waiting two weeks to see your pictures.
Two, most of my clients are business owners with careers and busy schedules. Taking one day away from work, their business, or their families to treat themselves to a full day at the studio is far more convenient when they get to walk out having already seen everything. A lot of my clients also travel in from out of state to work with me and my team, so they'll book a Friday or a Monday and turn it into a long weekend — a little mini-vacation. Getting to see yourself transformed into this new version of you should not be something you have to wait weeks for.
What should I ask in a boudoir consultation that almost nobody asks?
Ask about privacy. In ten years, I can count on one hand the women who asked whether the studio is private, whether the windows are blocked, and who controls which images get shared. A good answer: the studio is fully private — just you and my team — and nothing is shared without your explicit permission.
The question most women never ask about is privacy. In ten years, I think I can count on one hand the women who asked me how private the studio is — whether it's a shared co-working space, whether the windows are blocked out so nobody can peer in, and whether I share all the images from the shoot or they have a say in that. For most clients, these are very intimate images, and they don't want them plastered all over Facebook or Instagram. A lot of them decide later that they're happy for me to share, and they love it — but initially, these are images they may want kept completely safe.
So my answer is two-fold. First, we work in private studios where it's just me, my team, and the client in the space the entire time — no one else is coming in. Not a janitor, not a cleaner, not a co-worker, not another photographer. It is just us, and it is completely private. Second, we only ever share images we have explicit permission from the client to share. If a studio can't give you a clear, confident answer to those two things, keep looking.
What are the red flags when shopping for a boudoir photographer?
Two big ones. First, a portfolio full of professional models — real boudoir is about real women who've never been in front of a camera, not model-esque bodies. A photographer who only shoots models often can't pose everyday figures. Second, no active online presence: if they're hiding, ask yourself what they're hiding from.
A red flag would be a photographer posting a lot of pictures of actual models. What you see on my website and my Instagram are not models — they're real clients, real women who usually are never in front of the camera, women who didn't think they'd look beautiful or confident enough in their pictures, and women who weren't even sure they'd like their photos at all. So if a photographer is posting a lot of model-esque women or tagging models in their work, that's someone to be careful with. Models generally know how to pose, know how to work the camera, know their angles, and are very committed to fitness, which makes the photographer's job easier. Most women don't align with those things and need to rely on a photographer who's experienced in posing all body types, figures, skin textures, and ages.
Another red flag is someone who doesn't have an active online presence. What are they hiding? For me, I like to keep things up to date — what I'm doing in the studio, who I'm working with. I like to tag and collaborate with other brands, artists, and studios. My reputation is extremely important to me, and I only work with people who value that too. If you can't find any trace of a photographer's recent work, that's your sign to keep looking.
Real clients, every age and figure — lit and posed to flatter exactly who they are
Why book Mark Andrew Boudoir instead of another local studio?
Three reasons: style, experience, and process. My dreamy, cinematic, old-Hollywood-glamour look is unlike the same lighting and poses most studios use. I've photographed nearly 1,000 women of every size, age, and skin tone — so you get poses built for you, not a one-size system. And you see your edited images an hour later.
First, the work. You should want to book me because you align with my style — my dreamy, cinematic, Hollywood-glam, high-fashion-inspired look. That's very different from the general boudoir photographer who uses the same lighting, the same poses, and the same aesthetic as everyone else. I've curated a specific style that's unique and different, something that'll give you a look like nobody else's — inspired by movies, old-Hollywood glamour, and high fashion, while still giving you the sexy edginess you crave from a boudoir shoot. Every image I take has the purpose of being timeless, something you'll cherish forever.
Second, experience. I work with women of all sizes, skin tones, textures, backgrounds, heights, and ages, which means I'm not going to throw the same group of poses at you that I'd use on my last client. Many other photographers run a posing system — point A to point B to point C. I truly find what works best for your figure and your vision. I've worked with almost a thousand different women, helping them feel confident, beautiful, sexy, powerful, and in control of their own destiny.
And finally, the process. I walk you through every detail — I help you find the perfect outfits for your figure and skin tones, I design sets specific to your vision, and I'm passionate about the technical side, where one light flatters one skin tone better than another. Then it's efficient: you see your edited, retouched images about an hour after the shoot, you pick your favorites, and we help you design handcrafted albums imported from Portugal down to the last detail. I had a client who searched for weeks for the right photographer, finally found me, and traveled hours to work with me because she simply wanted the best — she'd seen how I guide and pose my clients head to toe, with zero guessing and zero worry about any detail. Every part of working with me is about you and what you want.
Still comparing photographers? Let's just talk.
If you've been shopping around South Bend and Michiana and you're not sure who to trust yet, let's just have a conversation — no pressure, no commitment. I'll show you my real reviews, walk you through my style, and tell you exactly what your day at the studio would look like, from wardrobe to the same-day reveal. The right fit should feel obvious. It's time.
